Sofia Vergara was born on July 10th, 1972 in Barranquilla, Colombia.  Vergara plays Gloria the beautiful younger wife of Jay (Ed O’Neil), who is the father or grandfather to the rest of the cast.  The role of Gloria is the biggest role of Vergara’s young career in the United States.  We will explore the acting career of Sofia Vergara leading up to her role on Modern Family.

Sofia Vergara got her first acting role in 1995 on the television series Acapulco, cuerpo y alma.  Although the role of Irasema was not huge it marked the start of her career in acting.  She didn’t have another acting role until 2002 when she played the role of Nina in Big Trouble starring Tim Allen.  Big Trouble was Vergara’s first movie acting role.  In 2002 Vergara also had an appearance on the TV series My Wife and Kids.

Her first big movie acting role came in 2003 the film Chasing Papi where she played one of the key characters Cici.  Sofia continued acting focusing mostly on television where she had parts in the following: Hot Properties (2005), Entourage (2007), Amas de casa desesperadas (2007), Dirty Sexy Money (2007) and Men in Trees (2008).  Most of the roles were small but they allowed Vergara to develop her acting talent and her resume.  Sofia Vergara got her big break when she was cast as Gloria on Modern Family in 2009.

Sofia plays the role of Gloria the spicy Columbian wife beautifully.  She is an attractive younger woman who is married to the older Jay (Ed O’Neil) which provides for some great comedic opportunities for the writers.  Gloria has a son Manny (Rico Rodriguez) from a previous marriage so she gets to wear many hats on the show.  Gloria’s character also provides some great material as she is the same age as many of her husband’s kids providing excellent jealousy material between her and Claire (Julie Bowen).

If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Modern Family I would highly suggest it.  The Modern Family cast is one of the best on television and Sofia Vergara is just one of the many excellent players.
