We are a country that likes our automobiles, we like the freedom they bring and the independence. Bigger cities like New York and Chicago cars are scarcer but in the west, the heartland and the south, cars are everywhere. LA has so many cars they can't all get down the road anymore. Chicago on the other hand restricts driving of personal cars in the city limits. However, for the most part we are an auto loving, buying and maintaining country. Cars do require more than the purchase price, something to remember when the purchase is being made. If you buy an old car, you might get a better deal in the beginning but if you are constantly at the garage and buying auto parts, you might not end up ahead in the end. Newer cars require more money upfront with very few auto part purchases for several years. Fuel is something else to consider. Our son bought a used truck that he fell in love with. We cover insurance and maintenance but he is required to keep it gassed. He is learning that his beloved truck is very expensive to keep on the road. A short trip skiing and he is once again out of gas with a very thirsty tank to keep filled. Gas consumption is also a factor to consider in buying a vehicle. Lastly insurance, it is going to cost a lot more to insure a new car as compared to a used car and the fancier the car the more the insurance. Car ownership is expensive from purchase to insurance to auto parts but the freedom of getting yourself and friends around is worth the expense and the hassles. Freedom never came cheap. |
