Alcoholism is the name given to the disease where the alcohol consumption is so high that it is affecting physical and mental health of a person, as well as having a negative effect on their social life, family life and job.

Taking one or two drink day for men, and one drink a day for women is not a health risk and is not called alcoholism. However, taking alcohol in more quantities than this, and having it impact the standard of life or quality of life are symptoms of alcoholism.

Alcoholism takes years to develop, and there are three stages an alcoholic goes through while getting addicted to alcohol. The stages are early stage, middle stage and end stage alcoholism, also known as late stage.

The first stage, Early Stage, is when the person starts relying on alcohol to help with their mood. They think that if they are upset, they can drink alcohol and they will be able to forget their worries and be happy. This way, they start relying on it and soon start thinking about alcohol. As the body gets used to drinking more and more, it starts needing even more to help the mood every time. This way, the person ends up drinking a lot of alcohol without even seeming to be drunk.

In this stage, the body is able to adapt to the alcohol levels as they increase. Therefore, if a person is in this stage, their body functions won't be affected by the alcohol. They will talk and act fine even when they are drinking heavily. As the stages progress, however, the body loses its ability to metabolize the alcohol and starts showing deterioration.

In the Middle Stage, the person starts drinking even more and will be found drinking in the middle of the day too. At this stage, the body is starting to deteriorate and can't handle the large amounts of alcohol therefore the tolerance for alcohol decreases and they appear to be drunk. Also, in this stage, the person experiences withdrawal symptoms if they give up drinking or stop drinking for a while.

In this stage, the person may know they have a drinking problem and it will be noticeable to others as well. However, the patient can now not judge how much alcohol their body can process so they experience increasing problems like stomach upsets, blackouts and hangovers. They will also deny to people who are concerned that they have a problem.

In the End Stage, the body has deteriorated so much that the mental condition of the alcoholic is also being impacted. In this stage the organs of the body start getting damaged, especially the liver, and the person may find that their relationships with friends and family have fallen apart, leaving them alone.

The body is unable to properly digest the food it is receiving due to the alcohol and the person may lose weight. They body has many damaged cells, but is not able to regenerate since it cannot get the right nutrients.
