The flop shot is one of the funniest shots in golf to hit and pull off. The flop shot is a super high shot that travels a short distance. The flop is best used to clear obstacles such as a tree to land the ball safely onto the green. Flop shots are often played just off the green. It is a risky shot but can pay off when hit correctly. The steps below will explain how to hit the flop shot.

Because the goal with a flop shot is to create as much height on the ball as possible, go to the lob wedge. A sand wedge works well too as long as it has minimal bounce. Fully open the face of the lob wedge up by rotating the club to the right (for right-handed players). Once the club face is fully open, grip the club.

Open up your stance by aiming your body way left of the intended target. Your club face should be wide open and pointing well to the right of your stance. Play the ball in the middle of your stance or slightly forward.

Even though you may be 5-10 yards from the hole, the flop shot will require a big swing with a good deal of wrist cock and a solid release at impact. The swing path should be flatter than normal.

Swing through the ball with a full swing and work the club underneath the ball. Do not let the club face roll over. -Keep it wide open through the shot. Fully uncock the wrist through the ball. Finish in a high swing position.

The ball should travel very high and work over whatever obstacle you are trying to clear. It should land softly with plenty of backspin and stop close to where it landed.

  • This is a advanced, risk shot. Stay focused through the shot to execute it well.
  • The flop is also a good tool to use when hitting towards a pin that is severely downhill from your lie.
  • The ball should be sitting up in a good lie before considering the shot.
  • Do not attempt to hit a flop shot from a tight lie. The club will not be able to work underneath the ball and more than likely the ball will be hit thin. Because the flop shot requires a full swing, a thin shot will sail way too far.
