When you're booking a cruise through either the cruise line directly or through an online travel site, as you go through the reservation process it will give you several cabins to choose from in the category you chose. For instance, if you choose a balcony stateroom on either decks 5, 6 or 7, you will often see a little diagram of those ship decks with flashing lights on the rooms that are available.

You pick your favorite and complete the registration. But what if you want a room in the same category but in a different location that what's being offered? Here's what you do.

This trick works best if you're on the main cruise line website itself. Even though you're being shown only 6-10 available rooms, depending on how early you book there's a good chance many other cabins are also available. You can scroll down the page and find the area to input the cabin number of your choice and it will tell you if that cabin is available. So by looking at the ship diagram you can see that room 6540 is a cabin you'd like but it's not listed as open. No problem. Enter 6540 in the field to check availability and if it is that room will become an option for you to choose. Select it and move on.

If you'd rather book with a travel agent or online travel site and not direct with the cruise line, you should call them with your new found information and request that particular room. If they aren't able to give it to you then book direct with the cruise line. If they are then you get the benefit of your favorite room plus the on board credits and discounts that site is offering you. It's a win-win situation.

Booking very early is the best way to be sure your favorite cabin is available. Some cabins are snatched up right away by people are booking their next trip right on the cruise. A few favorite rooms are the corner aft balconies because they usually offer bigger balconies for the same money and are in a very quiet location. Other favorite cabins are rooms that are closest to the stairs and elevators because it offers a fast route to the food or entertainment. If you have a favorite room and really care about where you stay on the ship you'll want to get your cabin reserved as early as possible.
